Aylesbury Vale Arts Council - Art Projects

Axis

On the initiative of Aylesbury Vale Arts Council, the sculpture Axis was created for Vale Park in Aylesbury as a lasting celebration of the new millennium.

Changes at Vale Park, arising from the development of Aqua Vale Swimming Pool and Fitness Centre (opened in 2001), created an opportunity for a sculptural feature. The new sculpture works both as a gateway and a focal point, or ?axis?, at the centre of the Park.

Artist Robert Kilvington was selected by a steering group which had first reviewed work by suitably experienced artists from around the country. Robert?s initial design ideas were presented as models and drawings. Then followed many weeks of consultation - about positioning, setting, scale - before the final form of the sculpture was confirmed.

At the start of his commission, Robert spent four days working with pupils at Ashmead Combined School, in a project organised by Aylesbury Vale District Council. Robert and the children explored ideas about possible sculptures for Vale Park.
Aylesbury Vale Arts Council has promoted and funded the commissioning of Axis as part of it's work to support and develop the arts in Aylesbury Vale.
